Angie Jewels: Rare As Diamond
The Story Of How A Jeweller Crafted Her Way To Success
It isn’t easy to make it in the jewellery business. Let’s be honest, most of us do not even know how to differentiate between real pearls and fake ones nor do we know that there is such a thing as your birthstone. With so little education and awareness, running a jewellery store is really an uphill battle. Which is exactly why Angie’s story is a real gem. Although she never exactly dreamed of becoming a renowned jeweller, she had always wanted to be entrepreneur; someone who holds the reins in her own life.
Her early exposure to jewellery was through working with her husband (then client). She provided an accounting software to her husband’s jewellery business back when they were college-mates. After getting married, she had to make the huge decision to let go of her own business in order to run a jewellery brand under her husband’s company. It was indeed a difficult decision for her at the time but she was always open and hopeful. She was still on her way to become a self-made business owner, just that she was now going down a path she had not previously anticipate or expect.
Thanks to her determination and grit, she grew Angie Jewels to where it is today. Today, the company manages a few brands and they are Angie Jewels Boutique which is the retail store, Kelvin Gems which is their online store and Angie Jewelry Academy which is essentially a school run by Angie aimed at imparting skills and education on fashion jewellery design. The academy was actually voted by a female magazine as ‘Malaysia’s Top 3 Jewelry Academy’ and now, they have grown to about 21 hobby classes catering to small groups of interested individuals all the way up to large, organised, team-building events of established corporations. What’s interesting is that it all started when Groupon first approached Angie to offer jewellery design classes on their website. After about a year, MilkADeal approached her and sent a group of professional bloggers to experience her class and blog about it. When asked about the reason for her success, Angie explained that she is always learning. Knowing the importance of being educated and accredited, she pursued her studies in Fashion Jewelry Design part-time at Singapore. This meant that she needed to fly to-and-fro Singapore every week because she had to juggle between her studies and work. She was also grateful that corporations have come to appreciate jewellery design as a form of art and an uncommon yet desirable team-building activity.
Angie is a progressive businesswoman and has always been looking to expand her business outside of the state and country. To date, the academy has a huge following in Kuching, Sarawak, and she hopes to replicate that same success elsewhere. Not only is she looking outside the country for business, she also organises company cum field trips to places like Bangkok, Thailand, in order for her team to learn of as well as be exposed to and inspired by jewellery designs out there. She is also a renowned speaker having been invited by Chanel to speak about diamonds in a 2015 exhibition and currently an active speaker for the Rotary Club. Some of her topics include ‘12 Month Birthstones’, ‘Real Pearl Vs Fake Pearl’ and ‘All About Diamond’.
Besides her wide knowledge on jewelleries, she is also an image consultant. She shared that planning for a client’s image starts with observing. It is not just about looking at what is currently in trend or popular. It is about discovering and understanding what suits and will look good on the individual. This includes a person’s mood and tone and that there is always a matching jewellery that goes with it. Besides, one of her most popular product is a necklace that can be worn 14 ways so you can be sure that they have something that suits you. In addition to that, Angie Jewels will be organising a Jewelry Design Competition to be held on 24th August.
