Becoming By Michelle Obama
Beloved Former FLOTUS Shares How She Became Michelle Obama In Warm And Revelatory Autobiography
By Hana Maher
It’s safe to say that Michelle Obama is one of the most iconic, compelling and inspiring women of the 21st century. The woman, who is the first African-American First Lady of the United States (FLOTUS), not only helped shape the most welcoming and inclusive White House in history, she also served (and continues to serve) as a strong advocate and global figure for women empowerment. Through her many advocacies, Michelle truly made the role her own. And let’s not forget, she raised two daughters under the unforgiving media glare while relentlessly standing by her husband’s side during harrowing and tumultuous times.
Wearing many hats such as a wife, mother, public servant and advocate, the woman who had undoubtedly lived a life full of accomplishments and meaning, invites readers into her world in her latest autobiography entitled, ‘Becoming.’ The 55-year-old law graduate chronicled the experiences that shaped the women she is today; from her childhood on the south side of Chicago, to her years of being a working mother as well as her tenure as FLOTUS.
And while her political experiences obviously do come into the book, ‘Becoming’ is a story about the life of a woman. It’s about growing up poor and black; about getting married and struggling to maintain that marriage; about motherhood and being a working mother; and ultimately, about navigating through unchartered, unfamiliar territories and coming out victorious.
Her memoir is a work of deep reflection and mesmerising storytelling, where Michelle told her story as she lived it, by recounting and sharing both her accomplishments and disappointments in full honesty. In fact, she had written the memoir with unerring honesty and lively wit, to a point, readers will be reminded that we’re all a work in progress as the chapter progresses. But perhaps what it more humbling is the fact that despite her polished resume and accolades, Michelle remained true to her roots and her identity – Michelle Robinson, the woman from a working-class family hailing from the south side of Chicago. This inherently, inspired readers to take pride in their roots and identity while highlighting that one’s upbringing and environment plays a pivotal role in shaping their future as well as character.
Genuine, warm, wise and revelatory. This book is a deeply personal reckoning of a woman’s soul and substance who steadily and consistently defied expectations. And by the end of this book, readers will have a renewed and deeper sense of admiration, respect and appreciation for Michelle Obama.
