Night owl, or evening person, is a common term for people who usually stay up late at night. Either a developed habit or genetic difference, these ‘owls’ tend to be more alert and awake at night as compared to their early bird counterparts. Although they might be known as night guardians in ancient times, protecting their tribe as everyone else is asleep, this lifestyle is now being tied to many health complications.

Most of the time, night owls have poor sleep quality as they still need to adhere to society’s morning centered schedules. This not only increases the risk of depression, it also sets the stage for unhealthy habits such as sedentary, alcohol drinking and late night snacking. All isn’t lost for night owls though as it is merely a matter of managing this lifestyle.

First off is doing something productive during the late hours when you are awake. Read a book, learn a new language, meditate or even spend time with your loved ones. Remember though, to not do anything rigorous. It is important to relax your mind and transition into sleep. The other is to manage your time well. You do not want to have a list of urgent work yet to be done at the end of the day and end up burning the midnight oil, sacrificing precious sleep. Being a night owl is not something that one needs to be ashamed of. Here’s a secret, these successful people are night owls too: former US President, Barack Obama and Reddit cofounder, Alexis Ohanian!
