The ‘Patron’ Of The Opera

The Phantom Of The Opera Welcomes Tun Dr Siti Hasmah As Its Patron

By Hana Maher

For decades, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, has wowed Malaysians with her phenomenal musical talent. From playing the violin to the piano, it’s undeniable that the First Lady of Malaysia has a soft spot for the arts. And in recognising her immense interest in arts, BASE Entertainment invited Tun Hasmah to be the patron for the iconic musical, The Phantom of The Opera, in which she had gleefully accepted!

"I have always had a soft spot for the arts, so when Base Entertainment invited me to be the patron for The Phantom of The Opera, I was delighted to accept the offer. The Phantom of The Opera is the world's most popular musical - a West End and Broadway classic - showcasing Andrew Lloyd Webber's most famous compositions. It has something for everyone - breathtaking special effects, beautiful costumes and a timeless romantic storyline,” she relayed whilst underlining her hope that Malaysians will seize the opportunity to witness this legendary musical.

And in honour of having Tun Hasmah on as its patron, BASE Entertainment is hosting the Tun Siti Hasmah Charity Gala on 3rd July 2019. The Gala is committed to raising funds for The Dyslexia Association of Malaysia (PDM) and the Malaysian Spinal Injuries Association (MASIA); two non-profit organisations that offer emotional and practical support to those affected, whilst demanding on the public’s generosity to continue their advocacy. In fact, Head of BASE Entertainment, Datuk Jared Lim, had conveyed that, “BASE Entertainment has always believed in giving back to the community, and we are pleased that The Phantom of The Opera can drive impact in support of causes that do not normally get enough visibility and attention.”

The iconic and longest-running musical in Broadway history – which had bagged 70 major theatre awards – was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber with lyrics by Charles Hart, and based on the novel by Gaston Leroux. It’s a story about a disfigured musical genius, known as the Phantom, who lives in the sewers beneath the Paris Opera House and falls madly in love with a young soprano named Christine. To give audience an authentic experience, Istana Budaya will be transformed into the Palais Garnier opera house of Paris, paired with soaring music, avant-garde costumes and mind-blowing performances.

The musical’s debut in Malaysia serves as a testimony to the grandeur and artistry of this production, and Malaysians can now enjoy the memorable experience while giving to a noble cause! In addition, The Phantom Of The Opera will be running until 7th July 2019 at Istana Budaya. Hurry and get your tickets here.
